LO1- Understanding the use of sound in media products

Film - Jurassic Park

These early scenes in jurassic park convey a crucial moment in the story, the protagonists' introduction to the island setting and the first reveal of it's dinosaur inhabitants. In these scenes see sound used to help sell the concept of these artificially made dinosaurs.
The music in the helicopter scene builds and lowers in volume based on whether the shots are in the helicopter (where the dialogue exposition is happening) and outside when we get wide shots of the island. throughout the whole scene we can also faintly hear the helicopter in background but never so much as so its volume would compete with music and other sound effects.
Later in the scene as the protagonists first encounter the Dinosaurs the soundtrack builds up in the background. It uses music conventional of an adventure film like Indiana Jones or Star Wars to elate the viewers and sell the beauty of the dinosaurs early on in the film. Having this scene early in the film with such positive music will remind viewers later on that the Dinosaurs aren't the villains of the film, instead just being animals trying to survive. During this scene we can also hear ever footstep that the dinosaur takes, with heavy, weighty stomps emphasising the size of the dinosaur and the force that they have behind them.

This short animation features no dialogue, so the only sound used within are sound effects and music.the music uses mostly piano and strings to evoke emotion in the viewer this is conventional of these types of short films and could easily compared to that of disney pixar, which this short film resembles in it's visual style as well. The sound effect used are cartoony and over the top in such a way that adheres to the non realistic animation style, these help keep the film lighthearted even during the more emotional parts later on in the film.
Whilst the film doesn't contain any actual dialogue there can be are more caricature-esque sounds from certain characters, such as sighs and heavy breathing. And with the character of the heart due to a non human face being harder to animate emotion for, we hear multiple non articulate sounds which convey emotion.

In this radio drama that was broadcast by the BBC we hear a wide range of different sound effects. The program begins with Music. The music is jazz and mostly composed of Trumpets, this is conventional mood of the detective drama, particularly noir. Thereby, this music sets the mood of this type of stories and lets the audience know what to expect of the upcoming story. We also hear narration early on followed quickly by dialogue. To make it easy for audiences to be able to recognize the difference between the two the dialogue has effects added to it which are dependent on its environment (e.g. echo). These voice alterations also help develop a sense of realism and immerse listeners. This is also done with the sound effects which are littered throughout usually in the background of dialogue or during short pauses in it, this is likely due to how sound effects by themselves aren't as compelling as human interaction and could make listeners lose interest quickly.

In this clip from a live bbc radio 1 broadcast. The audio is mostly made of live dialogue from the host and the guest (in this case Nick Grimshaw and James Cordon) as well as additional pre-recorded dialogue from other guests. this is due to radio 1 mostly being made up of hit music dispersed by chat and games from host DJs and a variety of guests (usually celebrities). In the background we can also hear a sting (background music) this helps to elevate the mood and make the show feel more energetic and seem like an overall positive experience. The music is quiet and simple enough so that it doesn't overpower any of the dialogue instead, seeming reminiscent of lift music. The music also can't be too loud or obvious as the it might affect the listeners view of the Artist's music which is what is one of the big draws of the radio station.

In this Documentary we hear a few different types of sound in effect. Immediately the most recognizable is the music, because the documentary is examining a real issue the music doesn't necessarily have to be used to dramatize the product, instead we see it used to keep the pace up and convey a mood during segments of pure footage (such as montages or timelapses). We also see voice-overs used to the same effect, however often it may start on a piece of footage of the character talking before cutting away and keeping the audio (or in reverse with the audio starting before cutting to the footage). We hear a lot of dialogue throughout, most of which will have been recorded live as opposed to in a studio this will also apply to sound effects; This is likely why there is an under-abundance of them throughout the product as they might not have been picked up by the microphone during recording and wouldn't be added in during post as there is no need to over dramatize the film due to it's format of documentary.
